Black bike week unfavorable
Local business owners gave their two cents recently in regards to the ongoing debate of whether or not to keep the semi-annual bike rallies rolling.
As it turned out at the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce meeting on July 15, most of the Chamber member respondents want tougher helmet laws from the state, have high concerns about noise pollution and feel the Memorial Day bike rally is of utmost concern.
Harley weeks noisy
However, no more of a decisive outcome was reached as 47 percent of respondents find the rallies unfavorable compared to 41 percent in favor.
The Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce sent a questionnaire out to its members on June 27. The Chamber respondents had 17 days to answer the survey questions and return it by July 14.
Chamber CEO Brad Dean discussed the findings with a power point presentation. Dean said it was important to remember that while the results hinted at possible feelings among chamber members, only about 450 of the nearly 2400 chamber members completed the survey.
Perhaps the most divisive statistic was the 35.9 percent of respondents who said they had an unfavorable impression of the Harley rallies, while 72.7 percent said they had an unfavorable impression of the Memorial Day bike week.
Other striking results included the feeling that the rallies place unnecessary pressure on local law enforcement: 60 percent agree to 22 percent who disagree. Sixty-five percent said they’d support statewide helmet laws.
