The best Thursday night party around the Grand Strand is at a sushi joint in Carolina Forest.
King Kong Sushi, the happening hotspot next to a Piggly Wiggly, of all things, is the place to be and be seen on a Thursday night. Many reasons attribute to its undeniable Thursday night popularity, though none as appealing as the drink specials.
Walk in the doors on a Thursday night and you’ll see a couple hundred empty Bud Light bottles on the tables. The staff isn’t slow, it’s just that the Bud Light longnecks cost only $1. Word? Word.
Not many other bars offer that kind of discount on anything less than foamy, draught beer, and never is it offered on any beer better than Busch Light or Natty. It’s a nice treat, especially for the student still living under mommy and daddy’s umbrella. Expectedly, a majority college crowd shows up.
However King Kong is not some dive college bar, smoky to the max with dirty-felted pool tables and dart boards (not that there’s anything wrong with those kind of bars, I’m just saying.) Adorned in chic black attire, the servers and bartenders could double as actors in Bicardi commercials. Plus, it’s smoke free. One never realizes how nice a smoke-free watering hole is until one can keep one’s eyes open without an uncomfortable burn.
The décor is contemporary dark wood with cool drawings of King Kong, of course. Vintage movie posters displaying the giant ape climbing the Empire State Building are hung in many spots. Oh yeah, and there’s a full-service sushi bar.
A long glass window allows hungry guests to see the plethora of fresh fish and meat available for rolls. The sushi bar stays open until about midnight. There’s also a kitchen with other menu options.
If the dollar Bud Lights aren’t tempting enough, there’s also $5 Jager bombs. A band normally plays in the corner of the restaurant. On Thursday July 10, the Potato Heads played. It was an appropriate acoustic duet. During the band’s breaks, house music is pumped through the speakers.
Interestingly, projected on the Kong’s two flat-panel plasmas wasn’t muted out sports highlights or news talk. It was a movie. Dazed and Confused played. Such a popular movie is Dazed and Confused that it left many at the bar to voice-over the scenes and happily recognize a certain scene as their favorite.
If your age is 21 to 28 and it’s a Thursday night, go to the Kong.
