The City of Myrtle Beach is again participating in the Coast RTA’s Coats for Kids Campaign. Collection boxes are available at City Hall, the Ted C. Collins Law Enforcement Center and the Law Enforcement Center Annex. Donations of clean, used coats, blankets, sweaters, hats and gloves are accepted. The boxes will remain at all three locations through Friday, December 12.

Citizens Police Academy Session 17

Applications are being accepted for the 17th Citizens Police Academy session, which begins January 5. Class meets each Monday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. for 10 weeks, with graduation on March 16. Topics include crime scene investigation, K-9, emergency vehicle operations and simulated firearms training. Class members also ride and work with Myrtle Beach police officers and staff for a behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement. Applicants must be residents of Horry County and at least 21 years old. A valid driver’s license, a criminal history check and a driver’s license background check are required. Once accepted, applicants must attend at least eight of the 10 classes and complete at least 25 hours of ride-along and work-along experience to graduate. Applications are available at the Ted C. Weight and fitness equipment has been moved to the Base Recreation Center while Crabtree Gymnasium is closed for expansion and renovation. Crabtree’s classes also are being taught at the Base Recreation Center, including Evening Cardio Kickboxing, Xpress Fitness Workout, Fitness Analysis Program, Personal Training with Crabtree Crew and Senior Fitness. To accommodate these new uses, the Base Recreation Center’s hours have been expanded. The center is now open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday; and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday. YOUTH PROGRAMS
Open Indoor Soccer: (Ages 16 and up) Players of all abilities are encouraged to come out for fun and fitness. Class meets on Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. through November 19. Free for members and $3 daily fee for non-members.
Start Smart Sports – This is a proven instructional program that prepares children for the world of organized sports without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Children work on learning all the fundamentals of sports including catching, passing, kicking and running in a fun non-threatening atmosphere! Class meets weeknights from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. for seven weeks. Basketball session starts November 6. Fees: $25 City Resident / $42 Non City Resident.
5 Star Basketball: (Ages 5-15) This class focuses on complete skill development through individual and group instruction. The key elements include Attitude, Teamwork, Offense, Defense and Total Ball Control. The Rookies meet Monday and Wednesday, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., the Pros meet Monday and Wednesday, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and the All-Stars meet Monday and Wednesday, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Check the skills chart at the front desk to determine in which level you should register. Shooting Stars: (Ages 8-15) Start with the fundamentals of shooting and work toward more advanced skills. Individual instruction and coaching techniques are used to insure progress for each athlete. Fitness Foundations: (Girls Ages 9-12). Success in everything starts with a strong foundation! Get the skills you need to succeed-a healthy lifestyle of fun, fitness and healthy eating. Skate Clinic: Kids ages 8-11 learn to skate in a fun and safe atmosphere! Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Matt Hughes Skate Park behind Pepper Geddings. This is a free program, but registration at Pepper Geddings is required to participate. Helmets are required.
Karate: (Ages 5 & Over) Tae Kwon Do is a martial art that uses both the hands and feet. It is a sport that physically benefits the whole body. One can develop flexibility, stamina, motor skills, strength, energy, self-confidence and balance. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Classes are ongoing, with fees due at the start of each month. New members are always welcome. Training Squad: Tired of the same old humdrum workout? Check out the Training Squad. Our Drill Instructors take the squad through fun and strenuous exercises that burn fat, increase strength and improve endurance. Be prepared to head to the beach, the fields, the stadium or to the pool. The Drill Instructors will do whatever it takes to push toward strong bodies and strong lives! Learn to Run: This is a new class that is designed to teach you to run in a safe and effective manner. No previous running experience is necessary. Learn to build your strength and endurance through walking and running as well as some simple strength training. Fitness Over 50: A fun and active workout geared just for our over 50 folks. Upbeat music, moderate impact activity and a group of folk from age 50-90 are the perfect combination for fun! Cardio Circuit: Fast paced workout designed to strengthen and tone all major muscle groups. Cardio Circuit utilizes the principles of circuit training and interval training to get the most possible out of this intense 45-minute class. Adult/Senior Women’s Volleyball: This is a special time for Senior Women to come out and play! Join our group for fun and fitness and some great volleyball play.
