Big D’s BBQ Trough in Conway offers big taste of southern barbecue

Traveling can be hard on the entire family, no matter if you’re headed to vacation or returning from one. Finding something to eat that everyone can agree on is a different matter altogether. Luckily there’s Big D’s BBQ Trough on the way into Conway that offers up a big taste of delicious southern barbeque buffet style.

The original location opened over three decades ago in Myrtle Beach by a father-son duo. Though “Big D” passed away, Russell Davis continues on as the owner and head chef. This Conway location has been open for a number of years now and after the tragic fire that took the first building, Davis decided not to rebuild and kept the Conway restaurant the sole location.

Fans of the first restaurant still make the trek to enjoy the southern cuisine and Conway locals adore the place. Visitors often stop on their way in or out of the Grand Strand, most of them familiar with the name from its early days.

The buffet, or trough as it were, is filled with meats prepared just that morning like their two types of pulled pork, the vinegar based or sweet mustard based. Both meats are wonderfully tender and can be easily prepared as a sandwich or ordered to go by the pound. Big D’s also prepares fried and barbeque chicken for the buffet. Ribs, pork chops, and fried catfish are added to the menu when the restaurant is open for dinner.

Amazing southern sides fill the rest of the trough, from baked beans to fried hog jowl. This also includes mac and cheese, lima beans, coleslaw, cornbread, and more. Chicken bog is one of their more popular sides, complete with sausage and the perfect amount of seasoning.

Some of the vegetables on the buffet may vary, but there is always a daily special for guests to enjoy. Monday has baked ham and Wednesdays offer country fried steak, while Fridays are known for meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

It’s easy to order food to go with barbeque sold by the pound and sides by the pint. Service is as quick as it can be, but that also depends on how busy the restaurant is. Occasionally a line forms out the door and with customers returning to the trough to indulge in more food, it can sometimes feel a bit crowded.

This also may mean items on the buffet run out, but almost always the kitchen has already prepared the next load. Guests with a sweet tooth will find this is especially true with Big D’s delectable desserts, particularly the banana pudding and sweet potato pudding.

Big D’s BBQ Trough is where you go to get your fill of southern cuisine without emptying your wallet. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, so all things considered it’s no surprise that the restaurant remains a beloved part of Conway. Whether you live nearby or are simply driving by, Big D’s has made it easy for their customers to eat like kings – or in this case, pigs.
