Brentwood features delectable French meals, Lowcountry favorites

A romantic evening in Paris is as close as Little River in the historic Brentwood Restaurant and Wine Bistro.

This lovely location in a Victorian house over a century old isn’t just an enjoyable date spot either, with an event venue, full bar with alcohol and private label wine…and spirits.

For the adventurous or merely curious, The Brentwood Restaurant not only offers a delicious menu of French and Parisian-inspired food, but ghost tours as well. These tours are planned year round and create a fun interactive setting for friends and couples. Before the tour, guests are treated to a three course meal and a short documentary on the Brentwood hauntings.

Even on evenings when there aren’t any scheduled tours, this French restaurant is bustling with regulars who aren’t bothered by the building’s purported ghostly gang. If anything, it could be said that the bar upstairs has become a local haunt, particularly between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. when Happy Hour takes place. Guests can enjoy appetizers and glasses of wine for $5 during this time, plus discounted cocktails.

Early Bird specials until 5:45 p.m. also brings customers through the doors, with the option for a three-course meal for only $20. Despite all these deals, The Brentwood’s regular menu is frequented just as often with its delectable French meals and even Lowcountry favorites with French twists.

Hors d’oeuvres provide many tasty ways to begin one’s meal, including the popular escargot bourguingnon, served by a half or full dozen with herbs in flavorful garlic butter. The fried green tomato napoleon combines the breaded vegetable with goat cheese and roasted red pepper coulis, a savory arrangement that works wonders together.

Small plates and main entrees continue the trend, hosting shrimp and grits and duck confit on the same menu. The Brentwood indicates when ingredients are locally sourced, such as using Little River clams in the restaurant’s version of bouillabaisse. Matching wines are also suggested for the plates, right down to the dessert menu where guests can order a digestif, even an espresso.

Guests with dietary restrictions are encouraged to ask about the vegan and gluten free meals. For a more involved exploration of French cuisine, Chef’s Tasting Menu is a seven-course journey with three different levels, each more exquisite than the last. The Brentwood also hosts a Wine Club and occasional cooking class.

Much of the house’s original charm has been kept in place, so although the floors may groan, the service is always welcoming and friendly. With the function of an upscale restaurant and the feel of a friend’s house, albeit haunted one, The Brentwood is an adventure waiting to happen.
