Key West Crazy in Little River has food for seafood lovers, landlubbers

Key West Crazy Chicken Salad Sandwich

All of the bars and restaurants along Waterfront Drive in Little River are a little crazy, but none as much as Key West Crazy, 4492 Waterfront Drive, Little River. This eatery has squeezed something into every inch of its small premises which only makes the character of the place seem even bigger.

The front patio facing the road is shadowed by the large oak tree and tends to fill up last, though it’s often used for live music with occasional dancing. Up the wooden walkway and into the building, guests will find another small corner for musicians, where karaoke often takes place too. However if it isn’t too crowded, many new arrivals will keep on walking through, past the bar, and onto the little deck that stands over the water.

Besides the restaurant’s cramped but cool style, customers tend to notice right away how laid back the atmosphere is, right down to the paper plates meals are served on. The menu is printed on a sheet of paper, drinks come out in plastic cups, and it all works well together.

Don’t be fooled by the appearance of a dive bar, because the menu offers many seafood options with the freshness and quality expected of a waterfront restaurant. Though this does sometimes mean that the kitchen runs out of shrimp, for example, the servers inform guests when the next boat is arriving with a fresh haul.

Landlubbers and kids aren’t left out either, with plenty of chicken to choose from, plus some beef options from steak to the KWC sloppy joe. Even quesadillas, nachos, and tacos have a place on the menu. For something perhaps a little better for the body, soups and salads are available, including their Crazy Seafood Stew that comes loaded with all sorts of sea creatures.

Sides include vegetables such as broccoli and asparagus, even wild rice and black beans. Coleslaw and hushpuppies are a popular choice, but many regulars enjoy the house made potato chips. For a few dollars more, sides can be sweet potato fries or a side salad, or even an entire crab cake.

While watching the tide come in and boats slowly pass on the water, visitors of Key West Crazy can imbibe on one of the bar’s delicious margaritas, such as the colorful Stoplight Margarita. During the weekday Happy Hour from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., many customers will treat themselves to a discounted appetizer like the popular Wow-Wow Shrimp or a house cocktail.

Key West Crazy has a lot going on for such a small place and this can often mean a bit of a wait. The impressive frozen margaritas from the bar are worth the wait alone and the food is enjoyable with great serving sizes. Ultimately, Key West Crazy is a dive through and through, so you may as well dive right in and get a little crazy.
