Local living like a tourist in the Myrtle Beach area: A night of laughs with Carolina Improv Company

Looking for a fun escape from everyday life? Visit Carolina Improv Company at the Uptown Theatre in the Myrtle Beach Mall.

You may not be able to escape completely because chances are you will get called on to participate. Think “Whose Line is it Anyway” without the outtakes – this is live.

Each show is different as the games and players are changed with every performance. The shows range from “family friendly” to “over 18” where they claim to be naughty but not nasty.

Some are long form where they maintain the same theme throughout to the short form where they perform skits or games as they prefer to call them. My favorite shows are “The Why Chromosome,” and “Whose Night Out is it Anyway,” basically the over 18 shows.

First “the director” warms up the audience by asking questions about where they are from, what they do, etc. Be careful what you say because the answers to those questions may come up later in the program.

The games are pre planned but take a different spin each time based on audience suggestions. My favorites are “Alter Ego,” during which two players talk to each other while two other players standing behind them share what they are really thinking, and “Director’s Cut” where the players have to replay a scene several times in different genres (comedy, tragedy, reality, game show, musical … you get the hint). Most shows have about nine different games so you are never bored, thanks to a talented crew.
You may leave the theatre with a stomachache from laughing so much, so I suggest you eat a light dinner before you come.
