Myrtle Beach area farm offers strawberry picking for Spring

Visitors looking to take full advantage of spring’s many charms on their Myrtle Beach vacation this season, should consider a trip to Indigo Farms in Calabash, N.C., for one of the best fruit-picking experiences around.

The farm, which straddles the N.C.-S.C. state line, is about a 30-minute drive north of Myrtle Beach and only about 15 minutes from North Myrtle Beach located off of S.C. 57 near S.C. 9.

The farmer’s market at Indigo Farms has been open for a few weeks already, but the stars of the spring market are the strawberries, which are just beginning to come into their own.

“I just tasted some and they should be in the store by mid-April,” said Sam Bellamy, co-owner of Indigo Farms.

Sam added that while the season usually takes a while to ramp up to full speed he expects that this year’s peak picking season will arrive not long after the beginning due to the colder weather which pushed these succulent fruits back a bit.

Indigo Farms offers visitors a chance to grab a basket full from the pick-your-own fields and also serves up as a selection of sweet Chandler and Camarosa strawberries at its farm market, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Also at the market is plenty of great locally-grown produce ranging from greens to veggies to nuts. According to Bellamy, April is also a good time for mustard greens, tender kale and asparagus.

If you are planning a fruit and veggie run to Indigo Farms, you may also want to leave time for a quick look at the Garden Center.

Here you can find herbs such as thyme, rosemary, mint, dill, parsley, lemon balm, basil, sage, annuals and they also have bushes, tomatoes, perennials and other plants as well as decorative garden items and accessories.
