Myrtle Beach SC Beach Ball Classic, CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational high school basketball guide

Since 1981, the Beach Ball Classic has been one of the premier high school basketball tournaments in the U.S.

Over the years, NBA players such as Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Rasheed Wallace and Raymond Felton have delighted crowds in the Myrtle Beach SC area. The tournament was a brainchild of then-Socastee High School coach Dan D’Antoni, who as coached with the Los Angeles Lakers and is a coach at Marshall University.

The tournament consists of 16 teams, many among the elite across the country. Games are played at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, right in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach SC.

In 1998, a girls tournament was added and – like the boys – has evolved from an 8-team event to the current 16-team field. As an added bonus, the Coastal Carolina and North Carolina women’s teams always play a game against an opponent during the girls tournament.

This year’s CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational takes place Dec. 17-22 while the Beach Ball Invitational will be played Dec. 27-31

Although the weeks before Christmas and after Christmas aren’t your typical sunning by on the shore days along the Grand Strand, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do for those coming to town for the tournaments.

Here’s a guide of the tournaments and some activities to pass the time between games for those visiting with a team.

If you have any questions about things to do in the Myrtle Beach SC area, where to stay or tournament-related queries, email our staff and we will be happy to help you out.

Be sure to check back during the event as we’ll be posting photo galleries and video from the games and around the stands.

Off the court activities

The average air temperature for Myrtle Beach SC in December is 60 degrees, while the water weighs in at a less-than-desirable 55. However, there are plenty of indoor activities to take advantage of … as well as some outdoor venues that cannot be missed regardless of the weather.

Here’s a few of those attractions:[slposts title_only=false instance=spring-break number_posts=25 custom_post_type=restaurant,nightspot,attractions tag=beachball excerpt_length=30 thumbnail=true wrapper_block_css=blog-list query_relation=AND thumbnail_wh=250×250 thumbnail_re=thumbnail]
