A small piece of Little River’s history continues to proudly provide friendly service and good comfort food to faithful customers. For over 60 years, R.W. Wood’s General Store and Grill has been a successful and loved part of the community. This eatery remains a type of dedication to the past and to the business’s original owner and namesake, R. W. Wood, who passed away last year.
The original building stands strong and mostly unchanged, with each creak of wood adding to its character. Most of the walls are decorated with an array of football memorabilia, from dozens of helmets to signed jerseys. Though these days the business operates less as a store, a picture of the late R.W. Wood sits at the front counter so he can continue to greet customers.
Meal options are kept simple here with a distinctly Southern feel. Breakfast foods include eggs, biscuits, and home fries, plus gravy is never out of reach. While many workers stop by in the morning on their way to work, just as many come in regularly to enjoy someone else cooking for breakfast.
The same could be same for the lunch hours, as the restaurant remains bustling with groups coming in during their break, and others calling ahead to pick up their meal and go. Many locals are greeted by name, including when their meals are ready to be picked up at the counter.
Every day offers a new special, so guests can choose their favorite meal and show up on that day.
For instance, Tuesday’s special is country fried steak, Wednesday has pork chops, and Fridays are dedicated to meatloaf. These specials come with a roll and cup of sweet tea, the proverbial cherry on top for Southern meals.
Because these daily deals are so popular, the kitchen is constantly preparing food. This not only keeps wait times low but the meals come out as fresh as possible, more often than not still steaming.
Some people decide to order something else from the menu, like R.W. Wood’s very popular hot dog or crispy chicken sandwich. There are sides as well, like crunchy sweet potato fries, tater tots, and cheese sticks. Unlike the specials, these meals aren’t necessarily made ahead so there may be a slightly longer time to wait.
The food is fresh, simple, and good, the prices are affordable, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Plus with so many years of experience and a dedication to Southern hospitality, R. W. Wood’s remains a popular choice in the area for a quick bite. R.W. Wood may no longer be with us, but without a doubt his soul lives on.
