Blue Angels test out the skies over Myrtle Beach. Here’s when you can see them.

A pair of Blue Angels on the F/A-18 Hornet make a site visit to Myrtle Beach for the spring air show at the General Aviation Terminal on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017. The air show is slated for April 28-29, 2018.

The Blue Angels are in Myrtle Beach this week checking out the Grand Strand skies in preparation for a spring air show next year.

The two members of the U.S. Navy’s demonstration team landed in an F/A-18 Hornet, multi-mission strike fighter, at the Myrtle Beach International Airport Monday afternoon to conduct the site visit.

Lt. Andre Webb and Lt. John David Steppe told the waiting crowd of local officials and media they were excited to be in Myrtle Beach for the first time.

“We’re going to put on the safest and best air show you guys have ever seen,” Webb said.

The team will be here through Tuesday to meet with airport officials and the FAA, as well as local police, fire and emergency management teams to hash out the logistics for the spring show.

The air show will include a team of F/A-18 fighters as well as “Fat Albert,” a C-130 and crowd favorite.

The Blue Angels will perform in their six signature gold-and-blue F/A-18 Hornets known for their hard-charging demonstration of precision formation flying while pushing their aircraft to the limits.

In addition to the Blue Angels, there will be a host of world-class aerobatic and war-bird performers, organizers said.

“We’re here to showcase the pride of the U.S. Navy,” Steppe said.

When the whole team is in Myrtle Beach for the show, pilots will also take time to visit area schools and hospitals.

The Wings Over Myrtle Beach Air Show is set for April 28 and 29 at the airport, in which the Blue Angels will be the featured fliers.

This will be the Blue Angles first air show above the Grand Strand in more than a decade.

John Cowman, president of JLC AirShow Management and the show’s promoter, said he is in talks with Myrtle Beach to make the air show an annual event.

Advance ticket and exhibitor information will be available December 18 on the Wings over Myrtle Beach website.
