Grasp a giveaway: A guide to Carolina League baseball’s best souvenirs for 2018

It’s officially SGA season.

That means baseball franchises across America will be handing out all sorts of souvenirs (nicknamed SGAs as in Stadium Giveaways) beginning this spring and culminating in the fall.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans and their opponents in the Carolina League have plenty of offerings on their promotional schedules already, and there’s some fun giveaways on tap.

If you’re planning to take some road trips this summer and want to catch some baseball while scooping up some souvenirs, the Carolina League provides plenty of options up and down the East Coast.

The Carolina League, an Advanced Class-A league, has 10 teams.

The Southern Division features the Buies Creek Astros (Jim Perry Stadium, Lillington, N.C.), Carolina Mudcats (Five County Stadium, Zebulon, N.C.), Down East Wood Ducks (Grainger Stadium, Kinston, N.C.), Myrtle Beach Pelicans (TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark, Myrtle Beach) and Winston-Salem Dash (BB&T Ballpark, Winston-Salem, N.C.).

The Northern Division includes the Frederick Keys (Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium, Frederick, Md.), Lynchburg Hillcats (Calvin Falwell Field, Lynchburg, Va.), Potomac Nationals (Pfitzner Stadium, Woodbridge, Va.), Salem Red Sox (Salem Memorial Stadium, Salem, Va.) and Wilmington Blue Rocks (Frawley Stadium, Wilmington, Del.).

Below are Myrtle Beach Life’s top 25 picks of the giveaways currently scheduled by league members for 2018, starting with No. 25 as we count down to No. 1 (Note: The Astros’ and Dash’s websites don’t currently have any giveaways listed):

25. Wrestling Masks
Ready to rumble? The Mudcats will hand out Wrestling Masks to the first 1,200 kids 14 and under on Aug. 18.

24. Military Tribute Card Sets
The Blue Rocks will give away 1,000 Military Tribute Card Sets courtesy of the Air Force on July 3.

23. Michael A. Tater (Taylor) Potato Statues
The Nationals’ Ode to the Potato Night on July 14 includes a giveaway of 1,250 Michael A. Tater (Taylor) Potato Statues.

22. Anthony Rendon Hat Hair
It’s your chance to look like the Nationals’ Anthony Rendon via a hat that includes replica hair of the Washington star to be given out July 27. Only the first 1,000 can pull off the look.

21. 70 Years at Grainger Stadium Pennant
Down East will celebrate a stadium milestone by handing out 70 Years of Baseball at Grainger Stadium Pennants to the first 1,000 fans through the gates on Aug. 25.

20. Mugsy Snow Globes
Salem will present fans with a snow globe featuring mascot Mugsy during a Christmas in July event July 28.

19. Rocky “Brrr”Winkle Snow Globes
Wilmington will hand out 1,000 Rocky “Brrr”Winkle Snow Globes on July 28 during its Christmas in July event.

18. P-Nats Helmet Toothbrush Holders
Potomac will help kids store their toothbrushes in style as the first 500 through the gates on June 24 will receive a P-Nats Helmet Toothbrush Holder.

17. 2017 Carolina League Champions T-shirt
The reigning co-champion Wood Ducks will grant the first 2,500 fans 2017 Carolina League Champions T-shirts on April 14 to commemorate their first Mills Cup title.

16. Philly Green Footballs
Paying homage to their Super Bowl-winning nearby friends, the Blue Rocks will pay homage to the Philadelphia Eagles by giving out Philly Green Footballs on April 28.

15. Carolina League Legends Card Sets
The Nationals will give out 1,000 Carolina League Legends Card Sets, featuring some of the all-time best to come through the league, on April 21.

14. Aviator Sun Glasses
Carolina will hand out Aviator Sun Glasses to the first 1,200 kids through the gates on Rock N’ Roll Tribute Night on Aug. 4.

13. Grow it Green Ivy Beach Towels
One of the most needed items here at the beach, a special beach towel will be available to the first 1,000 fans through the Pelicans’ gates on April 20 as they give away Grow it Green Ivy Beach Towels.

12. Lynchburg Hillcats bobblehead
During Star Wars Night on May 4, the Hillcats will give away 1,000 bobbleheads featuring mascot Southpaw.

11. Jurassic Park T-shirts
The Red Sox will hand out Jurassic Park T-shirts during a Jurassic at the Park event June 1.

10. Bucket Hats
Once again celebrating the hit HBO show “Eastbound and Down,” Myrtle Beach will give out 1,000 Kenny Powers-inspired Bucket Hats on Aug. 2.

9. Wilmington Blue Rocks bobbleheads
The Blue Rocks will give away bobbleheads on four occasions in 2018. The first three will feature the team’s mascot as bobbleheads of Rubble (May 26), Mr. Celery (July 14) and Rocky Bluewinkle (Aug. 4) will be handed out. On Aug. 25, a Judy Johnson bobblehead will be given away as a tribute to Negro League Baseball.

8. Frederick Keys bobbleheads
The Keys have two bobblehead giveaways scheduled for 2018. The first will feature a mystery bobble on April 20 and the second will be a “Longbow Bundy” (Dylan Bundy) hunting bobblehead to be handed out on June 29.

7. Harry Potter NightHouse Scarves
Salem will be giving out Harry Potter-themed scarves on May 19, a great novelty for all the wizards and wizard fans out there.

6. Myrtle Beach Pelicans bobbleheads
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will be giving out bobbleheads on three occasions in 2018. The first comes April 7 with Brian McCann, followed by Freddie Freeman (July 21) and a “Turn Two” bobblehead featuring Ian Happ and Gleyber Torres (Aug. 11). The bobbleheads work as an interlocking set. On each of those occasions 1,000 will be handed out.

5. Salem Red Sox bobbleheads
The Red Sox have four bobblehead giveaways planned for 2018. The series begins with a Jackie Bradley Jr. Clark Kent-themed bobble on Superhero Night (May 12), followed by a Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi Miami Vice dual bobblehead (June 22), a Larry LeGrande and Satchel Paige dual bobble on African American Heritage Night (Aug. 10) and a mystery bobblehead giveaway on Sept. 3. There will be 1,000 handed out on each occasion.

4. House of Salem: Game of Thrones Funkos
The Red Sox, in line with a popular theme in recent years, will give out “Game of Thrones”-themed Funko figures on April 6.

3. Gaming Consoles
The Mudcats will celebrate Gamer Night on June 9 by giving away three Playstation 4s, three X Box Ones and one Xbox One X.

2. Used Car
On July 21, Lynchburg will send one lucky fan home with a “new, used car.” Just what kind of car is anyone’s guess.

1. Potomac Nationals bobbleheads
The Nationals will not only be giving out the most bobbleheads in 2018 with six, but they will have some of the most creative ones. The series starts with a Stephen Strasburg Kentucky Derby Day Jockey bobblehead, followed by a Trea Turner Road Runner bobble (May 26), a Victor Robles “Rob Job” bobblehead (June 23), an Uncle Slam Paint-Your-Own bobble event (July 7), a Bryce Harper “Real Slicked Back Hair” bobblehead (July 28), a “The Sandlot” Squints character bobble (Aug. 4) and a Fans’ Choice Bobblehead Giveaway: Tanner Roark & American Eagle Team USA Championship Clinch. Each giveaway will feature 1,250.
