Highland Games to see new location, new events in 2018

A contestant competes in the Stone Put at the 2017 Myrtle Beach Highland Games & Heritage Fest.

The Highland Games are coming back to the Grand Strand March 23-25, 2018, but this time at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex instead of The Market Common.

In its third year, the  Barefoot Landing-sponsored event will  now feature the Saltwater 5K Run/Walk and a Doggy Dash both held on Friday night prior to the Ceilidh Welcome Concert.

Kids will also have a chance to watch Disney’s BRAVE on the Jumbo Tron Friday night beginning at 7 p.m.

The Boulder Challenge is another event that allows spectators to have a little fun with demonstrating their strength in carrying a boulder across the field.

Saturday brings a Quidditch Tournament with eight college teams competing and will be hosted by Coastal Carolina University’s Quidditch Team as well as the much anticipated Junior Athletic Division where kids ages 13-17 can compete in 4 of the 8 events the men and women athletes do in the Heavy Athletics. These include the Caber Toss, the Sheaf Toss, the Stone Put and the Weight for Distance.

On Sunday, the Games welcome The Sandy Jones Pipe & Drum Challenge. This five-person band ensemble will compete for prizes in three separate categories. This event alone will bring participants from several states throughout the southeast.

Throwing Clinics for any novice athlete or junior athlete wishing to compete at the games are scheduled for Jan. 27 and Feb. 10, from 1–4 p.m. both days and will be at  Grand Park at The Market Common. To register for one of the Clinics or the Saltwater 5K, visit www.saltwaterhighlandgames.com.
