Around the U.S., the month of May marks the 15th annual observance of National Military Appreciation Month, a time to honor the sacrifices, history and tradition of service members in all branches of the military.
Following suit with this nationwide celebration, the city of Myrtle Beach will once again host its own version of Military Appreciation Days from May 1-31 with a number of special event planned throughout the month.
Now in its sixth year, Military Appreciation Days was created to show support and appreciation for the men and women of the Armed Services, along with their families.
Throughout this month, military personnel and their families can look for discounts to Myrtle Beach restaurants and attractions, a traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall, live music concerts, a 5K run and a number of special events capped off with a Memorial Day weekend parade and Memorial Day observances throughout the Grand Strand.
Schedule of Events
Here’s a look at some of the details on what’s being planned:
• May 3-4: Vietnam-era helicopters will be on display at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center plaza, located at the intersection of 21st Avenue North and Oak Street in Myrtle Beach.
• May 22: The Military Officers Association of America Grand Strand chapter is sponsoring a golf tournament. Click here for more details.
• May 24: The annual Memorial Day weekend festivities will begin with a 5K Run/Walk on Ocean Boulevard and the Boardwalk at 7:30 a.m.
The Memorial Day Parade with grand marshal Montel Williams will begin at 10:30 a.m. running from 27th Avenue North to 9th Avenue North along Ocean Boulevard.
Following the parade from noon to 2 p.m. there will be a family picnic on Ocean Boulevard featuring live music from The Andrew Thielen Big Band. There will also be a Veterans Beard and ’Stache Beach Bash contest held during this time.
